Discover Brochterbeck: a recreation village in the Teutoburg Forest

2025-09-16

Nestled in the Teutoburg Forest and surrounded by gentle ridges lies Brochterbeck — a state-recognised recreation resort in the Tecklenburger Land and, with around 2,700 residents, the largest district of the town of Tecklenburg. Set southwest of Osnabrück, the village combines quiet countryside with more than 850 years of history — an ideal base for a restful stay.

More than 850 years of history

First documented in 1150 as "Brotterbike", Brochterbeck long belonged to the County of Tecklenburg. The Protestant village church still anchors the old centre, and in the year 2000 the village celebrated its 850th anniversary. Wandering through the hamlets of Oberdorf and Niederdorf, Holthausen, Horstmersch and Wallen-Lienen, you feel the deep-rooted rural character of this region.

Pure nature: the Bocketal

The pristine Bocketal valley is considered Brochterbeck's scenic jewel. From here the certified Teutoschleifen trails and the Hermannsweg ridge path lead across the crests of the Teutoburg Forest. A favourite goal is the nearby Dörenther Klippen cliffs with the legendary rock formation Hockendes Weib (the Crouching Woman). In autumn the woods glow gold; in spring the valley blooms.

An award-winning village

There is good reason Brochterbeck was named the most beautiful village in the Steinfurt district in 1985 and awarded the title "state-recognised recreation resort" in 1986. In 1999 it took the district gold medal in the "Our village should become more beautiful" competition — proof of its well-kept charm and lively community life.

History on rails: the Teuto-Express

Brochterbeck once had its own junction station on the Teutoburg Forest Railway. Today the historic Teuto-Express occasionally runs here — a nostalgic way to discover the region.

Your home on the Kleeweg

Fittingly close to the Kleeberg — the hill cut through for the bypass road in 1972 — our holiday apartment on the Kleeweg sits sunny on the slope above the village, with a garden, a balcony and far-reaching views. From here the old town of Tecklenburg, Ibbenbüren, and Münster and Osnabrück are all a short drive away. Welcome to Brochterbeck.
